We are devastated by the tragic deaths of 27 people attempting to cross the Channel to seek sanctuary in the UK this week. This is yet another warning cry that a compassionate and just asylum system in the UK is urgently needed.
Sadly, we know that this is not a one off. To address the dangerous rise in Channel crossings, we must ensure that safe routes to the UK are created, and that the two-tier system proposed in the Nationality and Borders Bill is stopped.
We’ve created a template letter you can use to write to your MP, to raise these concerns and ask them to take action.
The letter outlines that:
- Analysis from the Refugee Council shows that most people arriving by small boat across the Channel are likely to be fleeing persecution
- Closing safe routes to access asylum in the UK is only going to push people to make dangerous journeys
- The two-tier system for asylum seekers and refugees in the UK established by the bill is only likely to exacerbate discrimination and suffering rather than reducing numbers
