Poverty and Inequality

You are here: Home / Issues / Poverty and Inequality

Is not this the fast that I choose:

to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke,

to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?

Isaiah 58.6

We see injustice where the rules and norms of society discriminate against the weakest and give the advantages to the most powerful. Our work concentrates on some of the UK’s biggest current challenges, the looming housing crisis, rising poverty and inequality, and the economy.

Enough To Live

In 2022, the swiftly rising cost of living and accompanying energy crisis affected the poorest people in our communities most. Despite government intervention, many households were left unable to pay their bills or put food on the table.

This crisis is still ongoing. We need solutions that ensure everyone has Enough To Live.

Increasing Poverty by Design

Universal Credit is the UK’s main social security system. It has trapped and continues to trap thousands of families in poverty. Find out more and take action here:

The lies we tell ourselves

Produced by JPIT The lies we tell ourselves challenges the many widely accepted myths about those who live in poverty.

We believe that for justice to be done we must aim to develop a truthful understanding of poverty, its experience and it’s causes.

Enough

Enough is a report produced in 2015 about the Welfare Reform and Work Bill. Every child should grow up in a family with enough money that their basic needs can be met. This report outlines why having enough is so important, and how changes to the benefit system could break the link between what many families with children need and the support these families can receive.

Rethink Sanctions

Rethink Sanctions is a report highlighting the injustice of the current benefit sanctions regime and the harm it is causing to families up and down the country.

The report calls for a full inquiry into the system as well as the immediate cessation of removing benefits from families with children and those with mental health problems.

Housing

Britain is in the midst of a housing crisis. Housing costs are rising faster than wages. Inadequate housing support is available to people on low incomes. Not enough new, affordable homes are being built. Waiting lists have grown, and homelessness has increased among families and single people. Rough sleeping has more than doubled since 2010.

You can find resources to help you reflect on the housing crisis here:
