Admiral West’s Offer to MPs

MPs are frustrated with the UK Government’s “stupid”[1]Admiral Lord Alan West in evidence to the Defence Committee, Tuesday 24 January secrecy over the failure of the UK’s Trident missile test in June 2016.  Admiral Lord West, who previously had responsibility for the UK’s nuclear weapons, made his comments when giving evidence to the Defence Committee in Parliament (which the Government refused to attend).  He suggested that he could ask President Putin to tell us what date in June the test took place.  Julian Lewis MP joked “He will probably give us a film of the launch, as well.”

In reality the relationship with Russia will continue to present the UK and allies with challenges.  Consequently, the elimination of nuclear weapons under effective international verification and control is our surest security against nuclear accidents, miscalculation or deliberate nuclear attacks.  Regrettably, in its handling of the failed Trident missile test, our government has demonstrated again that it is bunkered in a cold war mentality, while most of the world is working on a new treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
